OR DANCE AROUND THE SKELETON
FROM THE EDITORS Our site is devoted to Terezin theater. This is ‘live reporting’ from the boards of this unparalleled prison town where the high illusion of acting prevailed over the fatal ‘prose of survival’. |

In that pitch darkness, poetry was living. We read verses to each other, the world of imagination was saving us. It was our world, and the other, real one, in these minutes went far away. Alas, not so far… Nobody was normal, neither we, nor our public, let alone the time and place of the happening. In this situation theater gained a different, extraordinary dimension. Culture became the limit of our existence, the world of the highest freedom that we could ever reach. Jan Fischer, actor in Terezin, theater director |
…People were dying, transports were departing… if an actor didn't turn up for a rehearsal, he was gone… But whatever we were doing, we were stubbornly connecting it with some happy future. Reality and theater were completely different things. It was impossible to write and stage a tragedy there… Ludek Eliash, actor in Terezin, theater director |
On the theater boards of Terezin, all genres were present; however, the backbone of the repertoire was drama and satire. Czech and German troupes treated classics differently. The Czech theater tended to the avant-garde style although its productions were not always professional, due to inexperienced young actors. The Germans preferred more traditional but also more professional art.
Among numerous plays, there were several, remembered by anyone who survived, namely, The Bartered Bride, Long Live Life!, Brundibar and finally, Marriage, produced by Gustav Schorsch. V.K.
